Abstract

Abstract

This cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study aimed to determine the relationship between psychological violence experienced by nurses and gastrointestinal symptoms. The study was conducted between September 20, 2022, and July 10, 2024; data were collected between September 20, 2022, and December 31, 2022. The study population consisted of nurses working at Tokat State Hospital. The sample size was calculated as 164 individuals using G*Power 3.1 software, with an effect size of 0.25, α of 0.05, and power of 0.95. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a Personal Information Form, the Psychoviolence Scale, and the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale. SPSS 25 software was used for data analysis. According to the research results, the mean total score on the Psycho-Violence Scale was 31.04 ± 8.58 (low level), and the mean total score on the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale was 28.57 ± 13.26 (low level). The study found a weak positive statistically significant correlation (p<0.05) between psychological violence and the sub-dimensions of gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, indigestion, constipation, and abdominal pain) and their total scores. Female nurses had significantly higher scores for constipation and abdominal pain, while single nurses had significantly higher scores for diarrhea (p<0.05). In conclusion, although the levels of psychological violence and gastrointestinal symptoms were low among nurses, an increase in the level of psychological violence was associated with an increase in the level of gastrointestinal symptoms. This finding suggests that interventions aimed at preventing psychological violence in the workplace may be important in protecting employee health.
