Abstract

This review evaluates the effects of adaptogenic supplements on metabolism, aging, immunity, and sexual function. Metabolism is associated with the balance between anabolic and catabolic processes, and this balance may become impaired with aging. Aging is a complex biological process characterized by mechanisms such as genomic instability, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, and chronic inflammation. Current scientific approaches focus not only on extending lifespan (longevity), but also on increasing healthspan, defined as the period of life spent in a healthy and functional state. Adaptogens are biologically active agents that modulate the stress response and support homeostatic balance. Withania somnifera is notable for its stress-regulating and anti-inflammatory effects, whereas Eurycoma longifolia has been associated with male sexual health and energy metabolism. Rhodiola rosea is primarily recognized for its effects on mental fatigue and stress tolerance. Although the testosterone-enhancing effects of Tribulus terrestris appear limited and inconsistent, it may exert indirect effects on libido. Panax ginseng is considered one of the most potent and multifunctional adaptogens, exerting broad effects on neuroendocrine, vascular, and immune systems. In conclusion, adaptogens should be regarded as supportive modulatory compounds rather than curative agents. Their potential benefits appear to be more closely related to improving healthspan than directly extending longevity
