Following CABG surgery, patients receive pre-discharge education on home care. This randomized controlled trial was conducted between July and September 2025, with a control group of 42 patients and a study group of 45 patients. The Patient Demographic Characteristics Form, Quality of Life Scale-SF-12, Perceived Stress Scale, and Richard-Campbell Sleep Scale were used. A statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of perceived stress scale (control group 44.76±9.60, study group 40.48±8.31) and Richard-Campbell Sleep Scale (control group 49.76±9.60, study group 64.33±23.83) (p<0.05). When the sub-dimensions of quality of life were examined, a statistically significant difference was determined between the mental sub-dimensions (control group 42.78±20.87, study group 51.13±14.57) (p<0.05). In light of the findings, it has been proven that individualized discharge education given to patients and their relatives after CABG surgery reduces perceived stress and improves quality of life and sleep quality.
MEHMET AHRAZ, Ayla YAVA, Mehmet ACIPAYAM Copyright (c) 2025 Göbeklitepe Medical Science Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://gobeklitepejournal.com/index.php/pub/article/view/400 Wed, 31 Dec 2025 00:00:00 +0300 THE EFFECT OF RESPIRATORY EXERCISE ON PAIN, NAUSEA-VOMITING, RESPIRATORY PARAMETERS, AND ANXIETY IN LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY https://gobeklitepejournal.com/index.php/pub/article/view/385
This study aimed to investigate the effect of respiratory exercise on postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting, respiratory parameters, and anxiety in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery. The study was a randomised controlled experimental study. The sample consisted of 90 patients. Data were collected using the Information Form, Visual Comparison Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Scale, Nausea-Vomiting Assessment Form, and Respiratory Monitoring Form. Fisher's Exact test, Chi-square test, Student t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, Paired Sample t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA test were used to analyze the data. In the intervention group, the decrease in pain, nausea, and state anxiety scores, as well as the increase in SpO2 value, measured at 0 and 24 hours postoperatively, were statistically significant. In intragroup comparisons, there was no statistically significant difference in respiratory rates between the intervention and control groups. Still, the difference between the mean pain scores and SpO2 values at 0 and 24 hours in the intervention group was found to be significant. It was found that the State Anxiety Scale score of the patients in the control group was significantly higher than that of the intervention group at the 24th postoperative hour. Postoperative respiratory exercise had a positive effect on pain, nausea and vomiting, respiratory parameters, and anxiety in laparoscopic surgery. It is recommended that patients should be encouraged to perform respiratory exercises more effectively in the early postoperative period.
Suna UZUN, Elif KARAHAN Copyright (c) 2025 Göbeklitepe Medical Science Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://gobeklitepejournal.com/index.php/pub/article/view/385 Thu, 01 Jan 2026 00:00:00 +0300 CULTURAL EVALUATION OF A MOTHER'S CARE FOR HER BABY IN THE POSTPARTUM PERIOD ACCORDING TO MADELEINE LEININGER https://gobeklitepejournal.com/index.php/pub/article/view/349
The purpose of the qualitative study is to highlight the results of culturally adequate nursing care by evaluating the care provided by women to their babies in the postpartum period using Leininger's Sunrise Model. Three basic approaches within Leininger's Sunrise Model were used in the care process: preserving cultural care, agreeing on cultural care, and restructuring cultural care. The case study involved a 22-year-old Syrian woman who could speak and understand Turkish, gravida 3, who was followed up in the obstetrics ward with a cesarean section wound infection. The nurse providing care to the woman in the postpartum period conducted her initial assessment and, in line with the first mode of the model, allowed the woman to perform practices related to her culture without judgment, including swaddling, applying kohl to the eyes, and tying a string around the wrist. According to the second mode, the woman was asked why she performed these practices. The nurse discussed the potential harm these practices could cause to the baby. In accordance with the third mode, the practices performed by the woman for the baby, based on cultural foundations, were organized without judging the woman or her traditions. Model-based postpartum care ensured that practices specific to the woman's culture were restructured in line with safe care principles; it strengthened the interaction between the mother and nurse during the care process, contributed to the mother finding the recommended care practices acceptable, and enabled the prevention of practices that could negatively affect the baby's health. These findings demonstrate that culturally competent nursing care supports the provision of safe and effective care during the postpartum period.
seda KARAÇAY YIKAR, Melike Nur SÖNMEZ Copyright (c) 2025 Göbeklitepe Medical Science Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://gobeklitepejournal.com/index.php/pub/article/view/349 Wed, 31 Dec 2025 00:00:00 +0300 ATTITUDES OF INDIVIDUALS ABOUT TO MARRY TOWARDS GENDER ROLES IN SOCIETY https://gobeklitepejournal.com/index.php/pub/article/view/397
This study examined the attitudes of individuals planning to marry towards gender roles, identifying the factors that influence these attitudes. It was carried out with 101 people who applied for premarital health screening in the central districts of Şanlıurfa between 24 February and 17 July 2025. Data were collected using an Informative Information Form and the Gender Role Attitudes Scale, and analysed using the SPSS 22.0 programme. Participants had a mean age of 24.5 ± 3.9 years, with 52.5% being female. The mean total score obtained from the scale was 42.43 ± 9.16, indicating a moderate egalitarian attitude among participants. Participants with a higher level of education and those who were civil servants had a higher mean gender role attitude score (p<0.05). These results highlight the importance of raising awareness of gender equality and integrating equality-based education into premarital counselling programmes.
Selma KAHRAMAN, Demet AKÇAYIR, Medine KILIÇ Copyright (c) 2025 Göbeklitepe Medical Science Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://gobeklitepejournal.com/index.php/pub/article/view/397 Wed, 31 Dec 2025 00:00:00 +0300 MICROPLASTICS AND MICROBIOTA https://gobeklitepejournal.com/index.php/pub/article/view/384
Microplastics (MPs), defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, are increasingly recognized as environmental pollutants. These particles typically originate from the fragmentation of larger plastic debris and are prevalent across marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. MPs are primarily composed of polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyurethane, and polyethylene terephthalate, along with various additives used to enhance their performance. Additionally, they can adsorb hazardous environmental chemicals, including persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals, thereby posing risks to human and environmental health. Human exposure to microplastics mainly occurs through ingestion and inhalation, with these particles being detected in food items, water sources, and even in the air. Evidence indicates that microplastics can accumulate within the gastrointestinal tract, potentially altering the composition of the gut microbiota and leading to dysbiosis. Such disturbances have been linked to various health issues, including gastrointestinal disorders, systemic inflammation, and chronic diseases. The potential impact of microplastics on the gut-brain axis has also been explored, revealing possible neuroinflammatory consequences. Alterations within the gut microbiome have been associated with the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, by disrupting the balance of the gut microbiota, microplastics may contribute to carcinogenesis through mechanisms such as chronic inflammation and DNA damage. Research has shown that exposure to polystyrene microplastics can induce metabolic reprogramming within the gut microbiota. To fully elucidate the complex interactions between microplastics and the gut microbiota, standardized analytical methodologies and further in-depth research are required. This review synthesizes current knowledge regarding the impacts of microplastics on the gut microbiota and aims to inform and guide future research directions in this evolving field.
Mustafa Doğan BEDİR, Ahmet YOKUŞ Copyright (c) 2025 Göbeklitepe Medical Science Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://gobeklitepejournal.com/index.php/pub/article/view/384 Wed, 31 Dec 2025 00:00:00 +0300
