Abstract

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to examine the demographic characteristics of the patients, the frequency of the departments requesting consultation and the reasons for requesting consultation in the consultations requested from the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (FTR) department of a university hospital.

Material and Methods: In our study, the records of patients who were hospitalized in a university hospital between January and December 2022 and were examined retrospectively through consultations made to the FTR department from other clinical branches. File data of 829 patients for whom FTR consultation was requested were reviewed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups according to gender. In terms of age group, the patients were divided into three groups as under 18 years  (pediatric age group), 18-64 years  (adult age group) and ≥65 years  (geriatric age group).

Results: The number of female patients and 347 (41.9%) male patients were observed as 482 (58.1%) of the patients aged between 1 month and 105 years, who were examined from the FTR clinic. The mean age of women was 57.43±19 (min:0-max:105) years, and the mean age of men was 48.31±23 (min:0-max:92) years, and the mean age of the whole group was 53.62±21 (years). The most frequent consultation request in all age groups was made by the orthopedics department. Pediatrics department consultation was the second most common in the pediatric age group, while neurology department consultation was the second most common in the other two groups.

Conclusion: Due to the fact that a multidisciplinary approach is preferred in the treatment of patients today, our study shows that all departments are in contact with the FTR clinic, and FTR consultation is needed especially because of neurological diseases and musculoskeletal pathologies. Therefore, special attention should be paid to both the education and training of rehabilitation and the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases while planning FTR specialty training programs.
